India to Rank Among Top Five Shipbuilding Nations by 2047: Sarbananda Sonowal.
India is on track to become one of the top five shipbuilding nations by 2047, with an additional shipbuilding capacity of 4 million Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT), announced Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday.
Speaking at the two-day ‘Chintan Shivir 2025’ in Srinagar, the minister emphasized the need for strategic policy formulation and skill development initiatives, encouraging close collaboration with state governments. He also reviewed ongoing ministry projects worth ₹2 lakh crore and set a target, after consultative discussions with experts, to complete at least 150 projects by September this year.
The event focused on enhancing India’s shipbuilding and repair capabilities, improving financial and digital solutions for maritime infrastructure, and promoting a greener, more sustainable shipping industry. A key priority was aligning efforts with the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision (MAKV) 2047.
Among the major announcements at the Chintan Shivir was the establishment of Bharat Container Shipping Line under the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI). Additionally, the minister declared that all major ports would tender for at least one Green Tug within the next three months as part of the Harbour Craft Green Transition Programme, aimed at accelerating sustainability initiatives across Indian ports.
