Following DMRC, Bengaluru’s Namma Metro Set to Introduce Cargo Services
Bengaluru’s Namma Metro to Introduce Cargo Services, Expanding Revenue Streams
Bengaluru’s Namma Metro is set to diversify its operations by launching cargo transportation services, a strategic move aimed at enhancing non-fare revenue streams. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL) is actively engaging with logistics and e-commerce companies to develop a comprehensive implementation plan, according to media reports.
Inspired by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s (DMRC) recent collaboration with Blue Dart, BMRCL seeks to leverage metro infrastructure to streamline urban logistics. In March 2025, DMRC signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Blue Dart to facilitate cargo transport via metro trains during non-peak hours, contributing to reduced road congestion and lower vehicular emissions.
Similarly, BMRCL plans to designate Byappanahalli as the central hub for its cargo operations. The proposed model involves utilizing the last coach of select trains for cargo transport during non-peak hours, ensuring minimal disruption to regular passenger services. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to enhance last-mile connectivity, alleviate traffic congestion, and promote sustainable urban logistics.
To finalize its execution strategy, BMRCL will hold discussions with private logistics service providers. Additionally, the corporation is exploring alternative revenue-generating opportunities, including in-train and station advertising, train wrapping, retail space leasing, and semi-naming rights for metro stations. Plans are already underway to wrap 10 metro trains each on the Purple and Green Lines with external advertisements.
By integrating cargo services into metro operations, Bengaluru aims to replicate successful urban logistics models like DMRC’s partnership with Blue Dart, fostering a more efficient and environmentally friendly transportation ecosystem.
